A speakeasy was a nightclub where the illegal alcohol ran as freely as people’s tongues.
Four of Auckland’s theatre and literary veterans – Stephanie Johnson, Thomas Sainsbury, Andrea Kelland and Verity George – have brought together eight short tales of confession and vice, desperation and obsession.
Gay boys, a cross-dressing businessman, a Chinese prostitute and a real life bisexual! These characters and more invite you into their hearts and minds, exposing their deepest fears and secrets.
- Stephanie Johnson is a novelist and dramatist. She established the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival with Peter Wells in 1998.
- Thomas Sainsbury has had his plays produced in the US, UK, France, Greece, Australia and throughout New Zealand. The Mall, Loser and The Christmas Monologues have all been published by The Play Press. He is currently writing and producing a second series of TV3’s critically acclaimed comedy, Super City.
- Andrea Kelland has been an actor, producer and director for over thirty years. Speakeasy is her first foray back to the stage since Hollywood Lesbians.
- A closet writer, Verity George is thrilled to have been performing for the last year at Dykes on Mics. Verity was last seen on screen as a nurse on Shortland Street wrestling with Maya the lesbian!
