Mercury Bay Art Escape (MBAE) Open Studio Tour is just around the corner, and this year’s celebration of creativity promises to be the biggest and best one yet!

The self-drive Tour takes place over the first two weekends in March, stretching from Tairua to Otama in the gorgeous surrounds of the Eastern Coromandel District and incorporates more than 50 emerging and established artists. This popular event is an incredible opportunity for both visitors and residents to explore the area, visiting local artists in their homes and studios, seeing them at work. Not only does it offer a chance to meet and talk to the artists, helping to understand the inspiration behind their work, but also provides a platform for purchasing work direct from the artistic source!

A number of excellent cafes and galleries are also involved with the Tour, exhibiting work by Art Escape members, so there are plenty of opportunities for refreshment along your journey while still being able to feast your eyes on a wide range of locally-produced art.

The Tour is launched at Hot Waves Café, Hot Water Beach on Friday March 1st, featuring a showcase exhibition of all the artists involved. The exhibition is on for the duration of March and is a superb way to start your Tour experience, by seeing a comprehensive “overview” of the Art Escape members.

We are delighted to announce that renowned ceramicist Peter Collis has been confirmed as our Guest Speaker for the Tour launch and tickets are selling fast! You can buy your tickets online through the Art Escape website or from the Hot Waves Café venue. They cost just $40 each, and the event is guaranteed to sell out in advance.

A comprehensive Guide is also available for purchase which is an invaluable reference manual featuring short biographies and images of work from all of the artists involved. The Guide also provides easy-to-read maps for use during the Tour and listings for a host of cafes, galleries and B&Bs in the area. Check the Mercury Bay Art Escape website for a list of venues where you can purchase the Guide, or buy direct from our online shop.
