Call for creative projects February funding
Applications for a share of $1m in annual arts funding for local community projects as part of Auckland Council’s Creative Community Scheme are open from now until February 22, 2013.
The Scheme asks local communities to present opportunities for accessing and participating in arts activities. More than 400 community arts projects acrossAucklandare funded each year.
Projects must meet certain criteria to be eligible; touching on diversity, young people and community participation. The criteria support the integration of arts and culture into the everyday lives of Aucklanders.
Rita Stone, Founder of the Young Auckland Shakespeare Company, was one of the successful applicants in the previous funding round. The Young Auckland Shakespeare Company offers classes studying the work of Shakespeare and performance along with a full production. Ms Stone says the funding has helped immensely with the promotion of their production, The Taming of the Shrew, at TAPAC in Western Springs.
“The funding was the difference between being able to publicise our production for the year versus not getting enough bums on seats, I was able to do things that weren’t possible before.”
Kaye Glamuzina, Manager Arts and Culture, says it’s been wonderful to see the vibrancy of Auckland’s artistic community shine through the funding of these local groups.
“There’s a huge range of arts projects funded including dance performances, art workshops, theatre, concerts and more. It is so rewarding to support creative Aucklanders develop their own unique space in their local community.”
The Auckland Creative Communities Scheme is managed by Auckland Council, as part of a national community arts programme funded by Creative New Zealand. Two $500,000 funding rounds are held each year, closing in February and August
