The Basement Loves Auckland Pride!

The Basement is showing off its colours to celebrate Auckland Pride Festival.

From 11th to 15th of February The Basement will be hosting its own mini-Pride Festival with five theatre works that reflect and celebrate the LGBTI community.

To open the week is Legacy Project which is a development series featuring six short plays created by local writers and directors. These theatrical stories are new works discussing a range of experiences in the New Zealand LGBTI community.

After performing a sold out show at the Sydney Opera House Brazilian drag diva Rhubarb Rouge will transform Upstairs at The Basement into a BDSM dungeon.  Lashings of Whipped Cream is a script written by award-winning New Zealand playwright Fiona Samuels and directed by Geoff Pinfield.

Dynamotion Dance Troupe are back at The Basement once again to perform their new Pride-inspired show Purple Rainbow. Following the induction of the marriage bill, New Zealand is being overrun with zombies…the gay apocalypse has arrived!   This comedic dance performance is directed, created and choreographed by Lara-Fischel Chrisholm and prolific Auckland playwright Thomas Sainsbury.

The GABA award winning production of Teen Faggots Come to Life tells five stories of teenage superheroes. Sponsored by the Mika Haka Foundation these are true stories performed by transgendered, gay, Fa’afafine, Fakaleiti and bisexual Maori and Pacific Island performing artists.

Site-specific theatre will be taking over The Basement carpark with Riding in Cars with (Mostly Straight) Boys. Playwright Sam Brooks breaks out of the theatre - setting his new work inside a car. This two-hander invites the audience to get amongst the action as they explore the universal dilemma of ‘wanting what you can’t have’.

To celebrate the week of Pride, The Basement has created a ‘Super Fun Gay Pass where audiences can see all five shows for $60. With this pass, audiences are able to see the Pride Week shows at concession prices and are available for purchase at The Basement bar.

The Basement are supporting the LGBTI family in New Zealand and they are super proud! Just as love knows no boundaries neither do these Basement shows.
