Young and Hungry Actors, Techs and Designers Invited to take over The Basement Theatre.
The annual Auckland season of Young and Hungry Festival of New Theatre is coming back to The Basement Theatre this October, comprising of two premiering New Zealand scripts written specifically for young people by Aotearoa’s top emerging writers Sam Brooks and Uther Dean and directed by Nisha Madhan and Anapela Polataivao.
In its third year running, the festival gives up-and-coming performers and production crew the chance to participate in a professionally-mentored show, with each of the two productions being performed every night over a two-week season at The Basement Theatre in Auckland’s CBD.
The Basement Theatre, home for Auckland’s most adventurous emerging artists, has shoulder-tapped an exciting team of professional directors, designers, and production management to mentor young actors, designers, stage managers and technicians aged 15-25 years who are passionate for the performing arts and interested in learning more.
“Young and Hungry puts young people at the centre of the creative process, and encourages them to grow in confidence as they work with top professionals and their peers to create something that reflects them,” says The Basement Theatre’s Co-General Manager, Sam Snedden. “It's a great programme because it doesn't demand that they do "right" it just expects that they will be themselves, y’know brilliant.”
The rehearsal and design process runs over 10 weeks to ensure enough time is given to realise the entire production - there are costumes to be made, sets to be built, props to be sourced, and lines to be learned! Registrations are now open for auditions and interviews. The Basement Theatre are looking for all levels of experience and high levels of awesome.
