Towards a Nation
After being on loan to other institutions for over 2 years, the Te Pahi medal returns to Auckland Museum.
Presented to Ngāpuhi chief Te Pahi by Governor of NSW, Philip Gidley King, this medal was offered as a token of esteem for their friendship and the sharing of knowledge.
This important taonga represents cross-cultural exchange and relationships between Māori and Pākehā. Today the medal continues to provide a strong connection to people past and present.
‘For our family the medal is like the man – we see in the medal Te Pahi.' Professor Deirdre Brown.
