A Bread Companion - Communal Dinners
For FESTA 2018 A Communal Loaf and Phillipstown Community Hub are collaborating on ‘A Bread Companion’ a celebration of community, feasting and food with three days of workshops and events around creativity, food, and people, where we will be aiming to capture the essence of the community and turn it into sourdough bread and other food.
For over a year the Phillipstown Sourdough Starter has been created by capturing the wild yeasts and bacteria in the local air, that together with flour, water and salt is then turned into delicious bread, baked in the communal oven at The Hub. It is this starter that provides the community ‘essence’ that will be used in the bread baked during FESTA.
Workshops include: ‘Breads of the World’ with the Canterbury Refugee Resettlement and Resource Centre, ‘#Foodagram’ how to take the best food photo ever for your Instagram account and ‘Tell Me Your Story’ where we will be collecting local stories.
Complementing the workshops are two Communal Dinners on Friday 19 and Sunday 21 October, when the community are invited to come together for kōrero, connections and kai.
All the material generated during the activities will feature in ‘A Bread Companion’, a book to celebrate the event and Phillipstown community, which will be published after FESTA 2018.
