Photival is back for its third edition. In collaboration with Wellington's most innovative art spaces, the capital’s only dedicated photography festival is reflective, current and seeking to influence.

For the month of May Photival brings you exhibitions, talks, workshops, behind the scenes events and a weekend-long film binge. Partnering with the Adam Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, Te Papa, Photospace, Flux, Suite, Nga Taonga and Te Auaha, the festival is a city wide event.

This year’s theme toys with the notion of influence - considering the power of influence, its effect on our lives, while also exploring influences on the art world.

Photival Director, Demi Heath says the line-up this year is bountiful. And she’s particularly keen to attend the behind the scenes tour at Te Papa with curator Athol McCredie.

“We’re so lucky to be able to share Te Papa’s photographic archive with a handful of enthusiasts. The archive is closed to the public ordinarily, so anyone who’s dreamed of a backstage pass - this is your moment, book now”.

Acclaimed NZ photographer Edith Amatuanai has two shows running concurrently during the festival, one at the NZ Portrait Gallery and the second at the Adam Art Gallery. While Save the Children’s incredible 100 year history is documented through moving portraits of children from around the world. The NZ Institute of Creativity - Te Auaha, not only showcases the winners of this year’s Photobook competition and exhibits the latest photographic influencers, but also hosts the Photival film weekend - a collection of films about NZ photographers including Peter Peyrer, Marti Friedlander and Robin Morrison.

Running from 3 May through to 26 May, Photival encourages Wellingtonians to walk their city and connect with current, topical images that reflect us and our cultures.
