A Hidden Voice
Revealed through the lens
by Alice Elcoat
A Hidden Voice is a photographic exploration of the artist’s personal experiences of self-discovery and a growing desire to advocate for others, which evolved from her own serious health battle. During her extended time in the hospital, Alice spent many weeks on the oncology ward in Starship as an outlier patient. She witnessed first-hand the horrific day-to-day battle that oncology patients face.
Through the development of her visual language, the images illustrate a form of clear, creative, and critical communication. They offer an insight into a world where words cannot do justice to the struggles that patients face. The series also serves to remind us of what is important in life - maintaining good health, giving and receiving love, and smiling despite the darkness.
Overall, A Hidden Voice acknowledges the uniqueness of every patient’s journey and encourages outsiders to be compassionate to those who are suffering in silence.
Depending on the Government COVID 19 alert levels, an opening date will be communicated closer to the time of the exhibition.
On show through to 1 November, Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
Proceeds of the sales will be donated to the Child Cancer Foundation.
