OLIVA BIRDSALL AND KENDAL SIMICH
STRANGE IMPERATIVES & SLEEPING CODES

In Strange Imperatives & Sleeping Codes Olivia Birdsall & Kendal Simich explore themes of organic resilience in the face of man-made adversity.

A printmaker stranded without her tools and inspired to create works exploring the strangeness of the Covid19 Lockdown experience, Birdsall began experimenting with using local flora as art materials. The resulting work are strands of native Muehlenbeckia Astonii peppered with fragments of morse code. The works’ low tech simplicity make it relative absurdity in contrast with contemporary digital communications. The artists asks “what does it feel like to be an organic entity hemmed in by externally imposed structures?”.

Ginkgo leaves and fossil-like fragments float through graphic-scapes of colour or monotone. In these works Simich references photographic negatives of pressed flora, its life cycles persevered as eerie, ghostly impressions. She explores ideas of physical permanency, biological life-force and the possibility of a past life.
