The Upstairs Gallery

The Upstairs Gallery is a community gallery with a light and airy space and boutique shop. We promote not only our established members, but new artists fresh to the arts scene.
Terry Prince is an award winning artist living and working in West Auckland.
He was taught by Garth Tapper and spent two years at Elam. Growing up he spent much of his childhood at Huia and later the big surf beaches of west coast Auckland. He finds their grand scale, shapes and endless colour shifts fascinating and derives great joy in trying to capture the often moody atmosphere of this, his spiritual terrain.
“ A stand out work among the landscape paintings. Capturing the vast openness of the Auckland west coast, the artist combines dry brush and masking techniques on the canvas to great effect. Confident compositional decisions turn our attention to the sky, an often over-looked element of landscape tradition” Andrew Rankin.
In January 2019 Terry was invited by Heritage Expeditions to be artist in residence on board ‘ Spirit of Enderby’ during their month long expedition to Antarctica entitled ‘In the wake of Scott and Shackleton’. His paintings from this life changing experience reflect the beauty of this vast continent and how insignificant we are by comparison. “ I am indeed lucky to be an artist at this time, to live where I live surrounded by beauty. There are times when I feel that I am recording for future generations, a disappearing world.”
Terry’s work can be found in private collections in France, the UK, the USA, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand. He has had six solo exhibitions.
Join us please as we celebrate this loved local artist on Friday 26 February from 6 to 7.30pm.
