The annual WAIPRINT exhibition presents recent work by Waikato Society of Arts members. Many of the prints have been produced downstairs in the WSA Print Rooms during the tutored and untutored printmaking classes. Others have been created in members’ own home studios. While many of the artists have been exhibiting for decades, others are just beginning to explore the world of printmaking.

The prints exhibited at WAIPRINT are original and autographic works: this means they are made by hand by the artists. ‘Printmaking’ is a broad term encompassing many techniques for mark-making. These include woodcut, linocut, collagraph, etching, drypoint, lithography, screenprint, monoprint, stencil, stamp and digital. Used individually or in combination, these varied techniques provide printmakers a full set of tools for interpreting and expressing their vision and ideas.

This year’s WAIPRINT Guest Artist is Gemma Reid. Inspired by light, shadow and architecture, the collographs in her exhibition, ‘Points of Viewing’, focus on the buildings of Kirikiriroa and the Waikato. She wants you to look up with fresh eyes and see what you’ve been missing.

Gemma’s workshop will take you through creating a collagraph or drypoint print and on to fashioning a free-standing object. It will be suitable for experienced printmakers and complete beginners. January 22-23, 2022. Register interest with Julie at
