BRIEF OUTLINE OF COURSE:
Delivered as a 10-week evening class, this course is a stimulating and inspiring introduction to the craft of playwriting, delivered by a working playwright and experienced tutor. Through weekly workshops based on Paul’s book, The Writer’s Toolkit, sessions will cover the fundamental elements of playwriting, including dramatic structure, the creation and function of character, how to writer dynamic dialogue, crafting a compelling plot, and much more.
Outside the group sessions, participants will apply the skills learnt to write a ten-minute play. Participants will benefit from private online tutoring sessions (2 x 15-minutes each) to advance their script ahead of a staged reading in the final session.
Participants will complete the course armed with a fully developed ten-minute play, plus a toolkit of tricks and devices to inspire future work.
You’ll Need: A pen and an A4 writing pad
Punctuality and a commitment to meet delivery deadlines in required.
THE TUTOR: PAUL KALBURGI, MA
Paul Kalburgi is an award-winning British playwright, screenwriter, and television producer. He received his MA (Writing for Screen & Stage) from the School of Drama, Film & Media at Regent's University, London and studied Story Analysis for film through the Writer's Program at UCLA.
Recent screenwriting credits include Clint Eastwood: Hollywood Outlaw (REELZ Channel, USA), Shortland Street (TVNZ, New Zealand), The Price of Fame (REELZ Channel, USA / Channel 5, UK). As a producer, Paul has made programmes for a host of networks in the UK and USA since 2007, across genres including celebrity/reality, docudrama, documentary, lifestyle, factual entertainment and local news.
Select playwriting credits include Broadway or Bust (Bath House Cultural Center, Dallas), In The Tall Grass (Bishop Arts Theatre Center, Dallas – Winner ‘Outstanding New Play’ DFW Theater Critics Forum, 2018), Maxine (Stockwell Playhouse, London and Times Square Art Center, New York), Almost The Birthday Party (Etcetera Theatre, London – published by Lazy Bee Scripts) and The Countess (Blue Elephant Theatre, London).
Alongside his writing projects, Paul continues to facilitate playwriting courses and workshops internationally. His book, The Writers’ Toolkit: Exercises, Techniques and Ideas for Playwrights and Screenwriters, is published by Nick Hern Books, London.
Paul is a proud member of the Dramatists Guild of America and currently serves as the NZ Ambassador.
