An offhand Facebook comment has given new life to the New Zealand Film Awards. Now a rousing celebration of all things cinema Aotearoa will cap the filmmaking year off, with The Sorta Unofficial New Zealand Film Awards - The Moas - on December 4.

Filmhead Ant Timpson and NZ Herald entertainment editor Hugh Sundae joked on Facebook about creating a renegade film awards after learning the Screen Director's Guild of New Zealand (SDGNZ) had pulled out of this year's prizegiving due to funding restraints and other issues.

The joke became reality when the two were surprised by the amount of support in the industry for such an event. The Moas have been pulled together with the support of the NZ Film Commission, Rialto Channel, NZ Herald and an evergrowing list of partners and supporters.

Timpson and Sundae are nervous but excited about the prospect of putting on a fitting tribute to what has been one of the busiest 12 months for film production ever.

"It would have been a pretty sad state of affairs not to have some sort of recognition for the features, documentaries and short films made in the past year or so", says Sundae.

"We've been told to keep the irreverence in check and to be respectful, I'm pretty sure I can do one of those two things well." Timpson adds, "I'm not too concerned, if anything goes terribly wrong I'm just going to blame Hugh.

"We all know most award shows are pretty long and sometimes dull affairs. Ultimately we want the show to be an entertaining evening, because a fun night is simply the best tribute to the films and people nominated."

The Sorta Unofficial New Zealand Film Awards will be held on Tuesday December 4, 2012 at the Wintergarden, The Civic, Auckland. There will be extremely limited seating however nzherald.co.nz will live stream the awards in full so all New Zealanders have the chance to witness this one-off renegade film awards show.
