The Body Festival offers 16 days of jam packed dance activity ranging from an array of amateur and professional dance performances guaranteed to delight and amaze audiences, as well as our much loved have-a-go dance workshops, which will inspire you to move your body!
We kick off the Festival again with another whopper – and it’s smokin’! Grab your Stetson, cowboy boots and chequered shirt, and mosey on down to Victoria Square on Friday 25 September to lend your legs to our world’s largest line dance attempt. Join us as we slide along on our own, especially commissioned, 'Body Festival Slide’ choreographed by Mary Stanley-Shepherd of the Cathedral City Line Dancers.
Other Festival highlights include:
The world premiere debut season of a newly created contemporary dance company: Southern Lights Dance Company, featuring choreography by critically acclaimed Shona McCullagh, Christchurch based choreographer Fleur de Thier, and Christchurch Arts Centre Artist in Residence visiting American choreographer, Zoe Scofield.
The Body DanceSport Championships held in the Christchurch Town Hall auditorium on October 10. Described by Festival Director, Adam Hayward, as 'showcasing the competitive dance side of all things best illustrated in Dancing With The Stars,' you can check out how the professionals do it in this exciting ballroom and latin dance competition, featuring an impressive floor display by reigning Australian Professional Latin Champions David Byrnes and Karla Gerbes.
For the more adventurous audience member the Festival presents ‘Back of the Bus:’ a dance show that takes place on a bus as it travels around the city. Come ride with Java Dance Company as they defy gravity, stall time and get the heart racing.
For those who are single the Body Festival welcomes the return of Speed Dancing in 2009. Think seed dating with dance where the Body Festival gives you the chance to try out a bunch of different dance styles to see if any take your fancy; and they don’t just mean the dancing!
Try a number of the Festival’s have-a-go dance workshops which cover a diverse sampling including Belly Dancing, Tango, Hip Hop, Salsa and Ballroom, to name a few.
So jump on board the dance wave that is taking the world by storm and celebrate the wonderful, wild, and sometimes wacky world of dance that is the Body Festival 2009.
