How do you fit five artists in a box? The group's name Exquisite provides a clue to their imaginative solution. Based on the Surrealist Exquisite Corpse game where an artwork is made by a group of players, each responding to the previous person's art of which they can only see a fragment...the contributors to Exquisite: Box of Birds each have one day to install their work. They will respond in some way to the previous artist's work, seen only the evening before. The one metre cubed Art Box has been divided into five layers using perspex sheets lowered in through the top so the perspex lid of one artwork becomes the floor of the next. Each artist takes up one layer, using materials ranging from floating scarves to cardboard zoo creatures. As a whole, the work explores ideas of collection and display, referencing the practice of museums, national narratives, geology, archaeology, history, and story telling.

The artists, Lisa Munnelly, Pippa Sanderson, Genevieve Packer, Sandra Schmidt and Gabby O'Connor can be seen working it out on the waterfront every day from Mon 17 to Friday 21 May. The results will be on view 24/7 until Sat 29 May, when the public can watch the work being carefully deconstructed.

See www.artbox.org.nz for details and images, which will be updated as the project progresses.

Lisa Munnelly, Pippa Sanderson, Genevieve Packer, Sandra Schmidt and Gabby O'Connor may have been born in different corners of the globe, but are now based and working collaboratively in Wellington; their collective experience and individual practices ranging through multi-media visual artist, writer, maker, collaborator and craftcamper; working across and through disciplines, materials, spaces and time zones.
