It just so happened that when I was living in Berlin the wall came crashing down. I assure you; I had nothing to do with it. This momentous event, the build up too it, & my experience of the chaotic aftermath in both Western & Eastern Europe, turned my life upside down. So what do you do when you’re from the south, there’s a new east west love affair going on, & you’re working on a project with musicians from Finland (the north)? Well in my case you come up with the idea of situating a symbolically universal, sculptural, multi-purpose structure in the centre of a reunified Berlin where the wall once stood (no mans land).
This train of thought gave rise to what would become the ‘Fenix’ (phoenix) venue design. This spiraling performance venue concept was designed to symbolise & celebrate such things as; the spirit & tree of life - the coming together of the north, south, east & west (the four winds) – the nurturing earth beneath us – the wide expansive heavens above us – the sun, moon & constellations - the four elements – creative inspiration – revitalisation - transformation & renewal.
Unfortunately nothing concrete came of this outrageous dream, but the Fenix took up residence in the imaginative highlands of my mind, took on a life of its own & has haunted me ever since. Eventually I came to accept the fact that the Fenix is what I call an inspirational ‘new world generator’, & my role was to bring it into this world & act as its guardian.
On numerous occasions since this realisation the Fenix has inspired me to express my thoughts on what a better, more localised, post-globalisation world may look like & how in praxis we could get there by creating; one rippling ring at a time, a design concept for a resilient, experimental, autonomous, eco-city homeland, which if realised by dreamers, artists & innovators; would be suitable for shaping & putting into practice a completely new truly 21st way of life.
And so it came to pass that the Fenix has given rise to the model, independent eco-city state of Ayvangard vision, which to this day, continues to unfold.
Over the years I have tried to advance the realisation of the Fenix new world generator artist/innovator colony settlement concept, transition township dream & model eco-city vision by presenting it many different ways. The big picture vision is after all a hybrid or synthesis of influences from many different times, places, cultures & philosophies.
The closet I ever came to realising some aspects of this vision was a few years before the new millennium. At this time I collaborated with a businessman who showed interest in building the Fenix in Gisborne & staging a mighty 24 hour, first to see the sunrise, millennium bash there. There have been a couple of other adaptations of the vision to suit other projects since then but these have all came to nothing.
Furthering the realisation of the first phase of this vision, which is too design & construct the Fenix & a habitable environment around it will require; the formation of a company with a social enterprise constitution; growing support for this dream; the participation of a dedicated team; raising capital & acquiring a suitable site.
The Ayangard booklet (see on the website)
Within the remainder of the Ayvangard booklet you’ll find the design concept for the multi-purpose, spiral shaped, domed amphitheatre called the Fenix (see title page sketch). This sculptural structure will primarily function as a performance venue, regular gathering place & magical tourist attraction. These activities will economically sustain a social enterprise & an extraordinary pioneering community of dreamers, artists & innovators that will design, build, occupy & administer this transition settlement. The goings on within & around the Fenix will be streamed live 24/7 on the internet. Every month at full moon a 24 hour ‘greatest show in the universe’ event will be held here. This monthly event will be a celebration of the sun, moon, constellations, four winds & elements, spirit of life & our aspirations for a better & brighter future. On these magical occasions, the apex of the Fenix will function as a launching pad, as we will also try to reawaken the lost flying skills of the ancients. Eventually the Fenix, which will also function as a new world generator, will be surrounded by an aesthetically designed, resilient eco village environment called Whirlingham. This circular hilltop complex will in time, become the centrepiece of a sustainable island township called Isleona, which will be encircled by a lake. This terraced island township will in turn, become the focal point of a compact, nominally independent, model eco-city state called Ayvangard that will eventually encircle it.
Shaping this visionary concept has been about finding a holistic way in which too; existentially & experimentally model our post-globalisation future in a creative, cooperative, playful, innovative & theatrical manner. In my view life & all aspects of the living of it will in the future be considered to be an integral, eternally becoming, work of performance art. This is what I call the topsy turvy, work of art world to come. So when the Kingdom Ayvangard is established & functioning as envisaged; it will secede from the nation of NZ thereby becoming a nominally independent region, which will set the tone for the eventual creation of a post-globalisation, New Zealand confederacy & our work of art world future.
N.B. Although I call Ayvangard a city its envisaged population would less than 10000 permanent inhabitants. The maximum population of Whirlingham, which will encircle the Fenix, would be about 300. Isleona's population would be no more than about 800 & each of the Ayvangard villages would be designed to accommodate around 1000 people. Of course if need be, the numbers could scaled up or down.
