Inspiring people, new ideas, innovation and exciting performance - nurturing the lifeblood of theatre practice in Aotearoa New Zealand since 1989!
BATS is a venue hosting an annual curated programme of theatre, dance, music and comedy from New Zealand's most exciting emerging artists. BATS Theatre is a uniquely Wellington institution and one of New Zealand’s strongest and oldest developmental theatres. Since 1989, our kaupapa has been to provide a supportive, professional theatre venue that fosters the development of practitioners, audiences and New Zealand performance work while remaining accessible to all. We lead the sector in providing the gateway through which new networks and skills are encouraged for the creative growth and development of Theatre in New Zealand.
BATS presents more than 130 shows a year and has given rise to some of the most vibrant events on Wellington's cultural calendar including the NZ Fringe Festival and the Young and Hungry Festival of new theatre.
The careers of some of New Zealand's favourite artists have launched at BATS including Flight of the Conchords, Taika Waititi, Robyn Malcolm, Jacob Rajan, Michael Galvin, Tim Balme, Dan Musgrove and Natalie Medlock.
Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh are the new owners of the BATS Theatre building at 1 Kent Terrace in the Courtenay Place precinct.
Apollo 13: Mission Control is a live film on stage, placing the audience into the heart of the action as HASA's Mission Control team, and pushing the boundaries for theatre in New Zealand.
