Hey there! Jon Kay, cartoonist-at-large, here! I am an Auckland-based creative-type person.... thing, with considerable experience in a wide range of graphic design, illustration and cartooning, story telling and animation techniques; both as a freelancer and as a student of Yoobee School of Design. At Yoobee, I gained qualifications in both graphic design and film making (including a thorough grounding in Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop, among others); so I know my way around following client briefs, page design and layouts, pre-press, research and idea development; as well as developing a firm grasp on the importance of planning, attention to detail!
In my time in Yoobee’s film-making courses, I created stories and scripts (both serious and comedic), storyboards, and concept designs for short films, music videos, animated TV intros and motion graphics assignments; as well as developing both hand-drawn and vector art assets (characters, props, backgrounds and title screens) for several short animated films—including 'The Cosmos Monster Movie Survival Guide' (based on my webcomic Cosmos) and the dinosaur epic Food Chain (based on waaaay too many Ray Harryhausen movies)—and bringing them to animated life using Adobe AfterEffects and the brilliant little plug-in DUiK (try it, it's fantastic!).
My freelancing and personal work? Well since you ask: among other things, I have created artwork for the in-development board game 'Global Citizen'; overhauled the mascot and app icon design for a Korean language app; designed gig posters and internet assets for the Auckland-based ukulele collective ' Four Dollars Thirty'; crafted parody ads, comics and character art for the collaborative superhero project 'Botur's Fight Squad'; brought my long-running comic strip Cosmos to the web (poor, poor internet); and am currently assembling illustrations for my sci-fi / adventure / humour-drama novel Island of the Bargain-basement Dinosaurs! How's that for variety?
I love coming up with and developing ideas, and finding creative ways to make a story, character or situation that little bit different - anything that fires my imagination, I’m all over it.... so if you want some illustration or design stuff, feel free to contact me at email@example.com!
