Born in Zimbabwe, Makanaka Tuwe migrated to New Zealand at the age of 10 in 2003. Makanaka is an advocate for women, Africa and the celebration of all cultures. At the age of 18, she was asked to be the keynote address speaker for ‘Celebrating the African Woman’ on behalf of the New Zealand Aids Foundation African Communities. From there she realized her passion for empowering those around her as well as cultivating talent. She is a strong young woman who has chosen to embody and embrace her gifts, talents and ability. Makanaka believes in the strength of possibility and is focused on making something out of nothing. Her drive and positive attitude have allowed her to direct ‘Africa on my Sleeve’ as she begins to build and pursue her creative opportunities.
In 2013, she set up Makanaka Tuwe as she realised her passion for helping community initiatives and small businesses. Makanaka is a young highly principled woman with an amazing work ethic. At a young age she has managed to be a part of events and organisations that have had a focus on enriching the lives of others. Currently she is working on the Africa on my Sleeve project and completing her Bachelor of Communications Studies in Public Relations at Auckland University of Technology.
Mission Statement, Objectives and Core Values
Africa on My Sleeve exists to provide a gateway for designers to showcase the finest quality fashion inspired by the diversity and beauty of the African continent.
Established in 2013, Africa on My Sleeve aims to promote designs that are rooted in the African culture. The role of Africa on My Sleeve is to assist designers launch into the market by offering manufacturing solutions thereby making them collaborative owners of a ready-to-wear collection. Annually, the organisation will host a fashion show to launch that season's collection. There will be a selection process, to select the designers that will be onboard for each year. The organisation aims to increase the profile of designers inspired by Africa by providing a professional environment that enables the selected designers to grow their brand. The objectives of Africa on My sleeve are to:
Connect with fashion lovers from a diverse background
Elevate African inspired fashion
Represent the creativity of unheralded designers
Represent Africa as a source of inspiration
Provide designers with a platform were they can showcase their creativity
Promoting the visibility and knowledge of African culture
Celebrate contemporary African glamour
Creating opportunities for disadvantaged communities
Africa on My Sleeve intends to tell Africa's untold story through fashion through the following:
Collaboration - We work together with designers to ensure their designs are manufactured and marketed to a wide audience
Passion - We are passionate about what we do
Diversity - We aim embody the diversity of the different regions within Africa
Quality - All our garments and accessories are produced to be of the finest quality
Reliability - We aim to provide reliability for our suppliers, designers and customers alike
An annual fashion show will be hosted to showcase the designs that will be available on the online store, it is an opportunity for attendees to have a preview of the items that will be available online. The fashion show will feature the selected and guest designers. The fashion show is also an opportunity for designers to showcase and promote themselves.
Items showcased at the fashion show will be made available for purchase on the online store. The online store's purpose is to help grow the businesses and brands of participating designers.
The Africa on My Sleeve team is made up of individuals with skills in public relations, accounting, finance, research, marketing, management, graphic design, modeling, fashion design and photography.
