Malia is the Director of Movement Of The Human and is Presenting RUSHES a new work in collabroation with Circa Theatre and Te Papa February 2018.
Since graduating from Unitec with a Bachelor of Performing and Screen Arts in 1998, Malia has created a significant body of performance work, completed numerous guest commissions for dance companies and directed some of New Zealand’s largest performance events.
Malia was awarded the Creative NZ Choreographic Fellowship for her work in 2013. As the Artistic Director of Movement of the Human, Malia regularly collaborates with artists, performers and companies to create new work, most recently ‘Meremere’, with performer Rodney Bell, ‘Brouhaha’ for NZ Dance Company’s Lumina and ‘Mana Wahine’ - co-devised with Taiaroa Royal and Tane Mete - for Okareka Dance Company which has toured extensively throughout New Zealand. The new work ‘Rushes’ was premiered at Auckland Live in early 2017.
Malia was the Artistic Director and choreographer of the World of Wearable Art Awards Show from 2002 to 2014. She has worked with government departments, councils and civic organisations on public and commemorative events including the opening of the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in 2015 and the New Zealand Day performance at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010.
Malia worked as Choreographer for ATC on their first production in their new ASB theatre 'Billy Elliot' and was one of the Artistic Associate for 2017 through which she developed the beignnings of a new work titled 'MOON"
