An End Has A Start by Matt Dowman
“AN END HAS A START” – Matt Dowman
Matts work investigates the way we receive and view imagery figuration/abstraction, natural/synthetic, metaphysical/physical, global/local. He uses these pairings to create tension within his work. His process allows chance to play a role in both developing ideas and in the physical making of the work, allowing the work to evolve in ways which aren’t pre-determined.
**For sale from the exhibition are two paintings by Matt, this piece measuring120cm x 120cm, painted with spray paint on wood.**
In 2004 Matthew graduated with an MFA (Hons) from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland. Since then he has had a significant number of solo exhibitions and group exhibitions including his most recent solo exhibition entitled ‘Screen’ which was held at the Antionette Godkin Gallery, Auckland.
Matthew has an outstanding record of awards including a merit award in both the 2011 Molly Morpeth Canady Painting Award and the 2008 New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Award. Matthews work is collected internationally and nationally.
Matthews work is currently dealing with the issues of surface texture, colour and repetition. The main areas of investigation have been focused on the translation of Graffiti/street art techniques, stencils, repetitive imagery, secular imagery into the painterly language of formalist abstraction and how this questions the hierarchies and premise of formalist painting reduction, progress, utopian meta- narratives of the perfect world, attaining or reaching a higher existence.
