Many actors believe that doing an American accent is ‘easy’, that all they need is a basic imitation of what they hear on television.  This could not be further from the truth.

Many actors believe that doing an American accent is ‘easy’, that all they need is a basic imitation of what they hear on television.  This could not be further from the truth.
With an increasing amount of work for actors coming from American productions (approximately half, as a panel of top casting directors at a recent WIFT NZ sponsored symposium on auditioning emphasized), it has never been more important for Kiwi actors to get their American accent truly up to speed.

Leading local casting directors who attended the WIFT NZ Casting Panel in Wellington fully support the idea of brushing up on American accents - confirming that a good American accent gives you an enormous advantage over your fellow actors in any audition.  Wellington actors now have the opportunity to develop their ability to work with a range of American accents.

Jade Valour, actor/singer/vocal tutor from New York is starting weekly courses devoted to coaching Kiwi actors with short and long term goals to:

·        Work on audition pieces that actors are currently preparing for
·        Develop a method for working with a range of American accents
·        Training for using the vocal instrument more effectively in any accent.

Jade is a trained classical/opera singer and Stanislavski trained actor.  She lived and worked professionally in Germany for 35 years before recently coming to New Zealand, and has extensive experience with foreign language speaking actors and singers.   Along with teaching American English to German speaking students and professionals, she has also worked with performers of many other nationalities (Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, Russian, etc.), tutoring them in English, German, Italian and French texts.
