Readers may have been wondering what has happened to my Scoop review defending the NZ Symphony Orchestra, its members and guests, in particular Dame Kiri te Kanawa, from the weirdly abusive views of local satirist Jeremy Wells, who accompanied the NZSO on its recent European tour. The article was published on August 1 on the online news Scoop, and pulled the following day, but not before it had been picked up and linked to news and cultural sites in the UK and worldwide. The Wells movie has received mixed reviews in New Zealand and on account of its scatological humour is unlikely to be distributed widely abroad. It has the grave potential to bring down the orchestra as a cultural institution in New Zealand. The NZSO and national news media have spent the past week in damage limitation. But the damage has been done and New Zealand is once again being made to look foolish and compliant in the face of raw cultural vandalism. The full text is attached herewith.
