The annual Performing Arts Network of New Zealand (PANNZ) Arts Market is opening today (Tuesday 6 March) in Wellington. New Zealand’s performing arts market, run by PANNZ and funded by Creative New Zealand, is a 3-day event where New Zealand artists pitch their new work to presenters from touring companies, venues and festivals.
A vital forum for promoting New Zealand performing arts, hundreds of performances are booked across the country as a result of pitching at New Zealand’s only marketplace for the performing arts. The Market opens the door for kiwi audiences to experience more and more professional theatre, music and dance in their communities.
The core of the Arts Market is the pitches including bright ideas, the Eventfinda Showcase and the Ticketmaster Music Showcase, with over 50 new New Zealand productions pitched each year. PANNZ Chair, James Wilson says that, “the full programme aims to create a market environment that is best suited to unleashing the incredible potential created by bringing together all of our delegates in the same room.”
Topics up for discussion this year include international touring, local Government advocacy, artistic programming and audience development.
Wilson says that the Arts Market “gives delegates the opportunity to explore new collaborations and ways to support touring and presentation. Our aim is to ensure audiences around the country have the opportunity to see more New Zealand work on stage locally.”
“The growth of the PANNZ Arts Market in the past five years has been thrilling with an ever growing number of venues and festival attending, and more artists and companies presenting than ever before. “There is an insatiable appetite for content, and there is an explosion of people making it work.”
PANNZ touring agency, Tour-Makers will announce results from their first 3 years of touring, in association with Creative New Zealand, including 143 performances to 25 communities across 243 days of touring to date. Tour-Makers Senior Producer, Drew James says that “the success of Tour-Makers highlights the appetite to experience high quality New Zealand theatre, music and dance in theatres throughout the country.”
PANNZ Arts Market 2018 runs for 3 days at MAC’s Function Centre in Wellington and will be opened by Wellington Mayor Justin Lester less than a week after announcing a significant financial recognition of the value of the performing arts to the City of Wellington.
PANNZ acknowledge that the Arts Market could not happen without their partners – in particular, Creative New Zealand and the Wellington City Council. As well as, EVANZ, Ticketmaster, WREDA/Venues Wellington, Norwest, Eventfinda, iTicket, Patronbase, New Zealand Festival, Ungerboeck Software, SOAR Print, the Pacific Music Awards, Baycourt Theatre, Q Theatre, CQ Hotels Wellington & Whitireia New Zealand.
