BC Collective are pleased to announce that Niuean artist Darcell Apelu has been selected as the recipient of the 2018 Lafaiki Residency taking place in Niue this October. The Lafaiki residency is named after BC Collective member Cora-Allan’s grandparents who migrated from Niue in the 60’s. This opportunity came out of BC Collectives current show at ST PAUL st Gallery What we do at Home: PDX to AKL (April 19- June 1, 2018) via a fundraiser and community event.

On May 5th Daniel Twiss and his family set up the Tipi which is part of their current exhibition in the AUT quad, and during the day welcomed visitors. Later that day BC collective held a Batons Up fundraiser as an initiative to fundraise money for a residency programme. With no current artist residency programme in Niue, BC Collective members decided to create the opportunity themselves and all proceeds fundraised have been used to fund Apelu’s time on the island.

With no expectations given to the artist, Apelu will use this opportunity to research into her family history and enjoy the events in Niue during October which include Niue independence day and an Arts and Agricultural festival.

“This experience means I am enabled to understand fully the spaces that I occupy both physically but also spiritually as a Niuean Pakeha Woman. Too connect with a place I have only ever experienced through a lens of others, this residency creates opportunities for me to grow both as a person and an artist and educator.”

BC Collective is beginning to grow roots in the community and can often be found running workshops, or cooking at art events. BC Collective member Daniel Twiss says “We want to be able to connect with our own rules of engagement; we don’t want to wait for people to create opportunities like this for Indigenous artists. We see and know our community and Darcell is the perfect artist for our first residency! ”

The Lafaiki residency offers a New Zealand Pasifika artist the opportunity to experience and spend time connecting with other communities.

“I am extremely humbled to be the first recipient of the Lafaiki Residency; I will do my best to uphold the mana that the Residency holds during and after my time.”

BC Collective hopes to provide a residency opportunity annually to help Indigenous artists connect and strengthen  ties to their whakapapa.
