Celebrate Aotearoa's 15 best young pianists at the biennial Wallace National Piano Competition on 18-21 July 2019

The 2019 Wallace National Piano Competition (WNPC) will take place on Thursday 18 – Sunday 21 July.

Since its inception in 2013, WNPC has firmly established itself as New Zealand’s premier national piano competition for emerging pianists. Previous prizewinners include Jason Bae (Steinway Artist) and Somi Kim (NZ Trio).

Fifteen pianists across the country ranging from ages 14 to 23 have been chosen to each present two 30-minute programmes on 19 – 20 July. Only four will progress onto the Grand Final on 21 July where they will each present a 45-minute programme, competing for a total prize pool of $20,000.

Acclaimed British pianist Charles Owen (Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London) will be adjudicating the 2019 competition. He will present a 45-minute solo recital as part of the Opening Ceremony, which will conclude with the eagerly awaited competition draw for our 15 semi-finalists. This is Charles’ first public appearance in New Zealand.

WNPC is run by the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust, in association with The Wallace Foundation, Templar Family Office, and The University of Auckland. WNPC is also supported by SOUNZ, the Institute of Registered Music Teachers - Auckland Branch, and Bach Musica NZ.

The Lewis Eady Charitable Trust was established to support music education and performance opportunities for young musicians throughout New Zealand. Find out more at www.lect.co.nz
