The Lewis Eady Charitable Trust Steinway Spirio Record Composition Prize

The Lewis Eady Charitable Trust Steinway Spirio Record Composition Prize was established by John Eady, General Manager of Lewis Eady, to encourage students from the University of Auckland’s School of Music to compose music for the Steinway Spirio Record. This new scholarship utilises Steinway & Sons’ new technology and encourages young musicians to expand their compositions to new heights.

The Steinway Spirio is the latest innovation from Steinway & Sons, a leading manufacturer of pianos. The Spirio Record (or SPIRIO | r) is a re-performance piano system capable of high-quality live performance capture and playback. This new technology, available exclusively on select Steinway grand pianos, allows new ways to access, share and experience performance in the modern world.

Eight applications were received from composition students enrolled in stage 3 and above (post-graduate level).  The three shortlisted students are (in alphabetical order): Oliver Bramah, Ewan Collins, Weeney Xian.

Each composition must be four to six minutes long and explore the technical capacity of the Steinway Spirio Record.  The final performance and prize giving will take place at the Lewis Eady showroom on Wednesday 11 March 2020.

The selection panel will consist of Dr Leonie Holmes (Senior Lecturer, School of Music), Dr Eve de Castro-Robinson (Associate Professor, School of Music), and Mr John Eady (General Manager, Lewis Eady).  The shortlisted applicants have received $1,000 each and the composer of the winning piece, chosen by audience vote on 11 March, will receive an additional prize of $500.

Lewis Eady has been creating musical experiences since 1884. Lewis Eady has represented Steinway & Sons for over 60 years as well as Steinway’s subsidiary, Boston and Essex pianos.  Lewis Eady also runs a thriving music school that supports and nurtures tomorrow’s young musicians. Find out more at http://www.lewiseady.co.nz
