Artist-led The Good The Bad Gallery is re-opening on 20th April in a new space in Mayfair Place, Glen Innes with community focused exhibition 'Tāmaki NOW'

Established in 2015 by local artist Gary Silipa, TGTB Gallery was the first art gallery in Tāmaki and produced 12 exhibitions over 18 months that included 54 artists, with over 1200 visits, before closing their doors in 2017. Since then, TGTB Gallery continued to exhibit in pop-up locations across East Auckland and is super excited to announce the long-awaited re-opening of a new physical gallery space.

This exhibition, in conjunction with Tāmaki Regeneration Company (TRC), showcases and celebrates the local community through their own eyes. Photos submitted to TRC’s ‘Tāmaki Is...’ Summer competition are presented alongside images selected from an open call-out to photographers by guest curator and photographer Brendan Kitto.

The open-call furthers the strong local tie of this exhibition, and presents budding photographers with an opportunity to have their work professionally printed and exhibited in a gallery setting. “We know there’s a lot of talent in this community but the challenge is getting it seen. This show gives local photographers the chance to tell their stories to a wider audience, and have their work celebrated,” explains Kitto.

Further details for the call-out can be found here. Submissions are open now until 11 April 2021.

TGTB Gallery remains dedicated to celebrating and supporting art made by local artists and providing a place for the surrounding community to engage with and experience art. Past artists exhibited by TGTB Gallery include local residents, Emily Karaka, whose paintings are currently showing in Toi Tū Toi Ora at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, and Czarina Wilson, whose textile works are now part of Te Papa Tongawera’s permanent collection.

“Community arts is an important way to get the local community together to participate and experience the arts in a way that has a direct connection specific to them. I started the gallery because there wasn’t a dedicated space like it and our first iteration proved something like this worked and was needed.” - Gary Silipa

The exhibition Tāmaki NOW opens on 21st April 2021 and runs for 5 weeks. Join us for opening night on Tuesday, 20th April 5-7:30pm.
