The Physics Room is a contemporary art project space located at 209 Tuam Street, Christchurch. We act as a catalyst for the development and promotion of ideas and debate through art, and are dedicated to facilitating experimental practice through gallery-based exhibitions, offsite projects, publications, residencies and public programmes. Our goal is to actively seek links between the arts and other critical areas of cultural production, and to involve art as a contributing voice in wider intellectual, social, and political debate.
The role of the Gallery Technician is to assist the Director in the preparation and realisation of the Physics Room programme and in the management of the gallery and its operations. The position is offered for a minimum of 40 hours per month, to be worked primarily during exhibition installation periods.
The Gallery Technician will work closely with the Programmes Manager, the Operations Manager, casual staff and volunteers. You will also develop external relationships with artists, curators, institutions, suppliers and contractors to ensure that projects are presented on time and to a high standard.
This is an ideal position for someone with a keen interest in contemporary art and a diverse set of practical skills including art handling experience, exhibition management and installation.
