The Physics Room is a contemporary art project space located at 209 Tuam Street, Christchurch. We act as a catalyst for the development and promotion of ideas and debate through art, and are dedicated to facilitating experimental practice through gallery-based exhibitions, offsite projects, publications, residencies and public programmes. Our goal is to actively seek links between the arts and other critical areas of cultural production, and to involve art as a contributing voice in wider intellectual, social, and political debate.

The role of the Gallery Technician is to assist the Director in the preparation and realisation of the Physics Room programme and in the management of the gallery and its operations. The position is offered for a minimum of 40 hours per month, to be worked primarily during exhibition installation periods.

The Gallery Technician will work closely with the Programmes Manager, the Operations Manager, casual staff and volunteers. You will also develop external relationships with artists, curators, institutions, suppliers and contractors to ensure that projects are presented on time and to a high standard.

This is an ideal position for someone with a keen interest in contemporary art and a diverse set of practical skills including art handling experience, exhibition management and installation.


Education, Experience and Knowledge required

The role of Gallery Technician requires a diverse set of skills, knowledge and attributes, as well as the ability to multi-task in order to achieve the best results possible given limited time and resources. Essential to this position is the need to communicate, plan and deliver projects in a timely and cost effective manner.

Specific experience and abilities required include:

-       Experience in gallery management, exhibition design and installation

-       Good communication skills to coordinate projects and convey information

-       Demonstrated problem solving abilities

-       Exceptional planning, organisational and time management skills

-       Experience and proficiency in assisting a diverse range of people

-       Able to work in a small team

-       IT and AV skills
