The Wholehearted

co-directed by Sam Scott and Scotty Cotter.

Massive Company are looking for an ensemble cast of 7 actors. The cast will be made up of a combination of emerging and professional actors.

The season opens March 2016 at Mangere Arts Centre, then we move to Q Loft for a 2 week season.

As this is a devised work, we are looking for people who:

  • Embrace the creating and devising process, using physicality, character and text.
  • Enjoy collecting and researching ideas and stories for the work.
  • Love to perform and work within an ensemble.

This is a paid engagement for development, rehearsal and performance. The initial auditions will be on Saturday 1st or Sunday 2nd August, recalls will be Sunday 9th August.

These will be at Auckland Theatre Company’s studios: Mt Eden War Memorial Hall, lower ground floor, 487 Dominion Rd. (car park and entry off Brixton Rd)

Massive Company is a professional theatre company with youth at our heart and is a recognised leader in developing emerging performing artists in New Zealand.

Since being founded 24 years ago by Sam Scott, the company has created work which has reached critical acclaim both at home in New Zealand and overseas. Some highlights have been touring Sons of Charlie Paora to The Royal Court in London; touring Up Close Out Loud to Contacting The World in Manchester; collaborating with NZ Trio, Gary Henderson and Chris O’Connor to create My Bed My Universe; Touring their acclaimed work The Brave to Hawaii this year.

Specialising in creating new theatre for emerging and professional actors, the work performed by Massive springboards from real New Zealand stories and real people, and expresses authentic emotions. Our work is curious, playful, inventive and energised.

The cast will respond to provocations Sam and Scotty have developed. The cast will also seek responses from other generations in their community to respond to provocations. This will be the springboard from which we develop the show.

Here is a starting thought:

“We want to combat this world before us that often feels mean, greedy, shallow, obsessed by the ‘like’, and moving away from real communication. We want to look at love, kindness, joy, imperfection, gratitude, appreciation, living a full life and being whole hearted,”

There will be two development weekends, one in September and the other in November. The directors and cast will form their story gathering process in this time. The actors will conduct their research and interviews for source material in this period.

Following that there will be a 2 week devising intensive in December, before the 5 week rehearsals begin in February. During the 5 week rehearsals period, the company will work Monday – Saturday.

All this development and rehearsal will be in Auckland. We can’t offer out-of-town financial support, if you’re not from Auckland, unfortunately.

Attached is a schedule of the process and production. Please check the dates and times carefully. If you can’t make the odd date, please let us know and we’ll see if we can work around this. Larger chunks of time will mean you can’t be involved.

If you have any questions about this schedule please contact marion@massivecompany.co.nz

The audition process will be a full day workshop audition on either Saturday 1st August or Sunday 2nd August. You will work with a group of other auditionees. It will focus on some of Massive Company’s foundation skills and making some small theatre pieces.

Once you are confirmed to audition, we will send you provocations and ask you to ‘collect’ your own thoughts and those of another person to bring to the audition as ideas to work with.

If you have any questions about the process please contact sam@massivecompany.co.nz

If it excites you to discover and create a show in this way then please audition. Once you’ve checked the attached dates please send us the below information about yourself:

  • Send a brief CV or bio of your work, or let us know any previous experience you may have had.
  • A head shot would be good, doesn’t have to be fancy pants, just so it looks like you now.
  • What, if any, of Massive Company’s work have you seen before?
  • Tell us what draws you to work with Massive Company.
  • Let us know your preference for auditioning on either Saturday 1st August OR Sunday 2nd August, 9.30am - 5pm. We will try and fit around as many of you as possible. Recalls will be on Sunday 9th August, 9.30am - 5pm.
  • Are there any dates in the attached schedule that you are not available for?
  • Contact details: email and phone number please.

Sam and Scotty will be in touch very soon with the provocations and what to expect on the audition day.

Thank you!
