Rotorua Museum is pleased to announce the Rotorua Museum Art Awards 2017 and is calling for entries from Bay of Plenty artists.

Entries close 5pm Friday 11 August 2017

The awards include:

$10,000    Rotorua Museum Supreme Award  

$1,000      Friends of Rotorua Museum Emerging Artist Award

$1,000      Toi Ohomai Innovation in Art Award

$500 x2    2 x More FM People’s Choice Awards (In gallery and on Facebook)

The Rotorua Museum Art Awards exhibition will be held at the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre from 9 September to 6 August 2017.

The awards are generously sponsored by Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust, Toi Ohomai and More FM, in association with the Friends of Rotorua Museum.

A Salon de Refusé, for works not selected in the exhibition of finalists, will be held at Rotorua District Library from 14 September to 8 October 2017.

 

Rotorua Museum Art Awards 2017 - Conditions of Entry

Entries are invited from artists, in any art or craft medium (excluding moving image), who currently reside in the Bay of Plenty.

Employees of Rotorua Lakes Council and Friends of Rotorua Museum executive committee are not eligible to enter.

Eligibility:

As an entrant you must guarantee that:

  • The work is a one-off original and not part of an edition
  • The work does not infringe upon NZ copyright laws
  • The work is the sole work of the artist entering (unless it is listed as a collaboration)
  • All works have been created within the 24 months prior to and including the date of entry
  • Works entered have not been exhibited prior to this exhibition
  • You reside in the Bay of Plenty (see map) at the time of entry
  • All works entered can be photographed and used for promotional purposes, including online

Entries are limited to a maximum of two works per artist at $40 per entry (non-refundable).

Size:

  • The longest side of wall-based works, including frame, must not exceed 1000mm (1 metre)
  • 3-dimensional/freestanding and installation works must not exceed a maximum of 1000mm in any dimension
  • Weight of works must not exceed 30kg
  • Rotorua Museum reserves the right to refuse any artworks that do not meet the criteria

Acceptance of works:

  • Acceptance of works will be at the sole discretion of the judge and Rotorua Museum representative
  • No correspondence will be entered into and their decision will be final

Presentation:

  • All entries must have secure surfaces (e.g. paint/varnish must be dry; fragile, pastel and charcoal surfaces must be ‘fixed’)
  • All works must be ready for hanging/display and come with detailed hanging/display instructions
  • Framed works must have strong cord or wire with flat ‘D’ attachments. Stretched canvas and/or other forms of loose canvas hanging with eyelets are acceptable. Please provide pins if the work has eyelets

Labelling:

  • All work must have the following information either written on, or attached to, the back of the work: artist name, address, contact phone number, title of work, date of production, medium, price (including commission)

Transport & Packing:

  • Entries arriving by courier must be suitably crated or boxed in rigid reusable packaging with the artist name and return address clearly marked
  • For entries not being uplifted in person - $30 per package freight fee must be included with the entry fee to cover repacking and return freight. Prepaid freight tickets cannot be accepted
  • All entries not uplifted by 20 October 2017 will become the property of Rotorua Museum

Insurance:

  • Insurance is the sole responsibility of the entrant while the work is in transit and for the duration of the exhibition. All reasonable care will be taken in the handling of all entries, but no liability for loss or damage will be accepted by Rotorua Museum, Rotorua Lakes Council, its officers and/or assistants

Sales:

  • All works must be for sale
  • The sale price must include commission of 25%
  • Commission from the sale of works during the finalists exhibition and Salon de Refusé will be retained by Friends of Rotorua Museum

Judge:

  • The award winners and finalists will be determined by a sole judge with assistance from a Rotorua Museum representative
  • The judge will be selected by Rotorua Museum
  • The judge’s decision will be final

 Selection & Awards:

  • There will be five awards:
    •                 $10,000     Rotorua Museum Supreme Award  
    •                 $1,000       Friends of Rotorua Museum Emerging Artist Award
    •                 $1,000       Toi Ohomai Innovation in Art Award
    •                 $500 x 2    More FM People’s Choice Awards (In gallery and on Facebook)
  • Approximately 30 works will be chosen to form the exhibition of finalists. All other works will be eligible for the Salon de Refusé
  • The first three awards will be presented at the exhibition opening on Friday 8 September 2017 at 6.15pm. The More FM People’s Choice Awards will be announced in the week following the exhibition close
  • All winners MUST attend the awards event in order to be eligible for the prize unless otherwise negotiated with Rotorua Museum in advance
  • All works selected for the finalists exhibition must remain in the exhibition for the entire period of the show from 9 September – 6 October 2017
  • Any dubious Facebook profiles used for voting will automatically disqualify all works by that artist from the More FM People’s Choice Award on Facebook. This will be at the sole discretion of Rotorua Museum

 

Important Dates

Entry forms must be received by: Friday 11 August 2017, 5pm

  • Please enclose the entry fee and any freight fees
  • The entry form can also be downloaded or completed on line at rotoruamuseum.co.nz
  • Post entry form with fees to: Rotorua Museum Art Awards, Private Bag 3029, Rotorua 3046

Delivery of artworks:

  • By hand:
    • All artworks delivered by hand must arrive on Sunday 27 August 2017 between 9am and 5pm
    • Artworks must be delivered to: Rotorua Museum (back door), Government Gardens, Rotorua
  • By courier:
    • All courier deliveries must arrive no later than 4pm Monday 28 August 2017
    • Courier deliveries can be made in advance of the drop-off date but must be delivered to: Rotorua Museum Art Awards, Rotorua Museum, Oruawhata Drive, Government Gardens, Rotorua

We reserve the right to refuse any artworks that arrive outside the designated times.

Finalist exhibition dates: 9 September – 6 October 2017

Salon de Refusé dates: 14 September – 8 October 2017

Return of artworks:

  • Personal collection of works:
    • Works not selected for exhibition, and not going into the Salon de Refusé, can be collected from Rotorua Museum (back door), Government Gardens, Rotorua on Sunday 10 September 2017, 10am – 2pm
    • Unsold works from the finalists exhibition must be collected from Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre, Fenton Street, Rotorua on: Sunday 8 October 2017, 10am – 4pm
  • Courier return of works:
    • Works not selected for the finalists exhibition and not going into the Salon de Refusé will be dispatched by Friday 15 September 2017
    • Selected works returning by courier will be dispatched by Friday 13 October 2017

Collection details for works in the Salon de Refusé will be notified at a later date.

Uncollected works:

  • Works not collected by Friday 20 October 2017 will become the property of Rotorua Museum to be disposed of as they see fit

Entry forms and payments need to be in by Friday 11 August 2017.
