The Arts Village in Rotorua, New Zealand is currently looking for artists (visual, writers, musicians, designers etc) to participate in the Open Studios project 2017/2018.

As a significant community art space in Rotorua, The Arts Village has a commitment to growing the arts and cultural sector of the community. This means actively leading or participating in the various arts and cultural projects in the local community. Also, supporting the growth of artists practice, developing audiences for arts and cultural activities, and supporting their continued learning through engagement with artists and their work.

The Open Studios Project provides artists with access to our purpose built making spaces for a fixed period of time.

The Arts Village invites local, regional, national and international artists to submit a proposal to take part in the Open Studios Project 2017/2018.


  • The aims of the project are:
  • To enliven and enhance our community through engagement with the arts.
  • To connect artists to their audiences.
  • To provide an environment for artists to fulfill their potential by having the time, space, and means to experiment and to be innovative.
  • To support and further the development of artist’s creative practices.

Programme/Submission Guidelines:

  • The residency period lasts for six weeks from 18th December 2017 though to 27th January 2018.
  • Three artists will be selected from the pool of applicants. Those who apply will be notified of the decision by 5pm on Wednesday 15th November 2017.
  • The Open Studios Project applications are open to any community or individual art practice (in any medium).
  • All spaces will be open to the public during The Arts Village opening hours.
  • A large studio space will be shared between all chosen artists, and set areas within this studio will be allocated and offered in accordance with your proposed art project.
  • Application deadline is 2pm on Saturday 4th November, 2017.

Applicants must read this document thoroughly and submit their application in accordance with guidelines and on time in order to be considered.

The Open Studios Project 2017/2018 is supported by funding from Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust.

All Participants are expected to:

  • Give a pecha-kucha style presentation at the start of the residency covering their arts practice and intentions for the residency.
  • Work on their own arts practice during the six weeks in an allocated work space in a shared studio (Studio Two) at The Arts Village.
  • Carry out at least 1 public talk during the six week period (this is in addition to the opening pecha-kucha talk).
  • Each carry out a minimum of 10 hours worth of free workshops/demonstrations relevant to their project. This is to enable the public to participate in the project, either by learning an artistic skill/creative approach or by contributing to the creation of a community artwork.
  • Present a final showcase in the closing week of the residency open to the public which could include: a talk/presentation/works performance. This will depend on the individual artist and how this suits their practice.
  • Please note that the requirement that had been in place in previous years for artists to be working onsite during set times no longer applies. Instead emphasis will be placed on the above requirements.

What iprovided:

  • A living stipend of $2000 towards your living costs during the project.
  • A materials grant to carry out your project with, amount TBC. This grant will also be used for materials for workshops/demonstrations.
  • Shared Studio Space (and associated costs) for your use during the Open Studios Project.
  • Internet access.
  • Promotion.

How to apply


  • Anyone who is willing and able to undertake the programme can apply (international artists are required to have a fluency in English). If you are from overseas please note that you must be eligible to work in New Zealand to accept this residency.
  • Successful applicants will enter into a contract with the Rotorua Arts Village Trust
  • In applying to this programme applicants acknowledge that they have read and understood all of the conditions and expectations of the Open Studios Project.
  • Must not have previously been an artist-in-residence on this programme.

How To Apply:

Your residency application to the Open Studios Project must include:

  • Application Form: A copy of the application form is provided in this document. Please complete this and attach with your proposal as a cover sheet
  • Residency Concept Proposal: Please provide a brief outline of the project that you propose to work on during your residency. Articulate this in some way (written, visual, open to creative interpretation) within two A4 sheet sizes. You may adapt your proposal once you are selected and on site, if negotiated with management. Please be sure to indicate any special workspace requirements.
  • Artist Biography: Please provide a brief artist bio of no more than two pages. Include any significant exhibitions, commissions, events and creative highlights. Please also state your association with the Rotorua region if this applies.
  • Examples of your work: Please provide colour images of three examples of recent works.
  • Workshop/Demonstration Proposal: A brief outline of how you intend to engage the public through workshops and/or demonstrations of your arts practice.

Selection Procedure:

  • Applications to the Open Studios Project are  reviewed by The Arts Village Selection Panel.
  • Artists may choose to attend an interview with representatives of the selection panel, on Monday 13th November. (Recomended).
  • Artists will be notified of the outcome of their application by phone or email by 5pm on Wednesday 15th November 2017.
  • The selected artists will also be announced on our website: www.artsvillage.org.nz
  • Where an artist declines to take up a residency offer, that place may be offered to another artist at the discretion of the selection panel.
  • The selection panels decision is final, no discussion will be entered into.
  • The closing date for applications is fixed and all applicants wishing to be considered must have their full application in before the closing time. Late applications will not be considered.

Submitting in Hard copy:

  • When you have completed your proposal please drop it off to The Arts Village in single sided A4 format. All proposals will be manually scanned to a digital format by staff so please take this into account.
  • Please do not stick original photographs or works onto paper, but print them directly. Do not bind, staple or hole-punch your proposal: enclose it in a A4 folder or envelope.
  • If you would like your application package to be returned to you, you must include a return address postage paid envelope or courier pack with your application.

Submitting a Digital Application:

  • Hard copy applications are preferred however you are also able to email your application through. When you have completed your application please email it through to projects@artsvillage.org.nz in a .pdf file no larger than 20MB.
