Pop Culture Breakdown is the podcast that dismantles the messages in the media we love. We explore common tropes in movies and TV, follow recent pop culture news, and tackle our own ignorance and biases about the media we consume.

That’s right, another straight white male wants to talk movies but this isn't just another movie podcast. I want to talk openly about how tropes and messaging affects our worldview, and use personal examples to explore the conclusions we draw from the media we consume. How did the ‘keep persisting’ approach in RomComs affect our views of dating? How effectively are women being represented today? How well have the films we watched growing up aged and how did they affect us?

I believe that the demographic most in need of influence in this sphere is the straight white straight. Starting with myself, I want to create a platform that encourages conversation and identifies the changes in thinking we can all make to become more inclusive and empathetic.

I’m looking for a partner who loves a good story, and gets excited dissecting and reviewing what they watch. I have the 'straight white male' covered, so am looking for a female partner who can offer different perspectives to myself, and challenge my ideas by sharing the ways in which movies and TV have affected her.

Do you think Oceans 8 is a cash grab or great byproduct of the modern feminist movement? Do you think Call Me By Your Name relied heavily on novelty or think it was a necessary entry for the sake of representation? Let's talk about Handmaid's Tale and the tightrope it walks between cultural reflection and abuse porn.

If talking about these things interests you I’d love to hear from you.

Applicants must be:

  • Movie/TV buff

    • Someone who enthusiastically consumes movies and TV as a hobby

    • Enjoys reviewing, analysing and talking movies and TV

    • Familiar with common filmic tropes and tactics

  • Auckland-based
