Orchestra Manager (25 hours / week)

This position can be combined with the Production Manager role – also currently advertised - to make one full-time position

About Orchestra Wellington

Orchestra Wellington is Wellington’s orchestra, performing for the region for almost 70 years.  Each year close to 100,000 people hear the orchestra perform live; at our concert series at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre, as well as at community, family and school concerts, at outdoor events and in productions with New Zealand Opera and the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

Purpose of the Position

The Orchestra Manager plays a key role in the administration team, acting as the central point of contact for players, Music Director and guest artists for all matters relating to our concerts and other activities of the orchestra. The Orchestra Manager is also central to the management of our community performances, and is key to financial management, creating complex budgets.  The role is primarily based in the Orchestra Wellington office, with some work on evenings and weekends required.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Concert planning - working with hirers and community partners to manage our community concerts and outreach activities
  • Financial planning and budgeting - preparing budgets for all concerts and activities, managing and tracking orchestral costs against budget for all activities,
  • Calling players to form the orchestra for all engagements, according to the repertoire and in consultation with Section Principals, General Manager, Music Director and Concertmaster
  • Preparing players’ contracts, roll calls, managing player database
  • Act as primary point of contact for players regarding engagements
  • Process payroll for players following each engagement
  • Book rehearsal and concert venues, accommodation and travel arrangements for all out-of-town artists and players
  • Manage all auditions

 

Candidate requirements

  • Proven experience in the classical music sector
  • A degree in music performance or equivalent experience
  • Experience as an orchestral musician an advantage
  • Detailed knowledge of the working practices and needs of an orchestra and its players
  • Financial literary essential – ability to calculate complex orchestral budgets based on instrumentation for different repertoire
  • Familiarity with orchestral repertoire
  • Self starter; ability to take the initiative and drive projects through to completion
  • Attention-oriented, efficient and capable of coordinating and tracking multiple projects simultaneously
  • Good communicator, able to establish rapport with people at all levels
