Doc Edge, an Academy Award® qualifying festival, is New Zealand’s only and Australasia's premiere international documentary film festival held annually in Wellington & Auckland.

The 14th Doc Edge Festival will be held in Auckland 30 May - 9 June 2019 and in Wellington 13-23 June 2019.

Submissions are open on FilmFreeway until 15 January 2019 in the following categories:

  • International Feature Documentary
  • International Short Documentary
  • New Zealand Feature Documentary
  • New Zealand Short Documentary
  • New Zealand Primary/Intermediate Student Documentary
  • New Zealand Secondary Student Documentary
  • New Zealand Tertiary Student Documentary
  • Kid/Family Documentary
  • Maori/Pacific Documentary
  • AR/VR/Interactive Documentary

The Festival includes:

  • Gala Film Awards
  • Q&A sessions with filmmakers
  • Doc Talks
  • Docs 4 Schools - an education programme offering free screening to students Year 5-13
  • Story Edge World Exhibition - a showcase of documentary interactive digital projects
  • Screen Edge Forum, an industry conference which includes the annual Doc Pitch, a pitching forum for feature-length, short and TV series documentary projects.

Awards & Prizes

Doc Edge is a competitive festival with various award categories. Films that have already qualified for consideration for the Academy Award® short and/or feature documentary categories are not eligible for Doc Edge Best NZ/International Short/Feature competitions. Films selected for the Best of Fests programme are eligible to compete for the Audience Award.

Doc Edge Superhero - for outstanding contribution to documentary
