‘Mercury Plaza: Origins + New Beginnings’ is a project aiming to promote local Chinese artists in an iconic and temporary space: Mercury Plaza.

Mercury Plaza is on the cusp of eventual closure for the development of the City Rail Link. It’s an iconic landmark; and has been a popular food court destination over the last few decades. It also has historic ties with the Chinese community; the owners being some of the original Chinese fruit and vegetable shop owners on Karangahape Road.

We are lucky enough to be able to transform two major areas of Mercury Plaza into exhibition spaces - a large wall by the entrance and the ramp access room next to New Gum Sarn Supermarket.

We hope the show can act as a platform for underrepresented creative voices that widens the accessibility of traditional exhibition spaces.

This is a rare opportunity to showcase local Chinese artists in a unique location. We invite you to express your origin stories and visions for the future, through several mediums.

Producing the show are artists Joni Lee and Jia Luo. With the help of crowdfunding, we hope to provide a high quality and memorable show. Help us reach our target by sharing and donating to the Boosted Campaign: https://bit.ly/2J0HVOT

We look forward to receiving your submissions!
