He angitūtanga: The opportunity

At Auckland Zoo we bring people together to build a future for wildlife. We do this by caring for wildlife, inspiring our visitors to value wildlife, helping to conserve wildlife in the wild and building a high-performance organisation.

We are delivering an ambitious $150 million capital expenditure upgrade programme, which will see the transformation of much of the site and the development of new infrastructure, experiences and facilities across the zoo.

Reporting to the Zoo Director, this is a key role in the leadership team responsible for providing direction to, and oversight of, the management of the Zoo’s commercial and business activities towards achieving ongoing financial sustainability and enhancing delivery of our wildlife conservation mission.

The role is responsible for maximising revenue generating opportunities for the organisation in a way that is consistent with our mission, strategic intents and organisational values.

The role is also responsible for management of the operational aspects of the zoo visitor experience; development and delivery of a comprehensive domestic and international tourism sales and tourist product programme; management of on-site retail sales; and management of the delivery of all on-site catering through our third-party contractor.

The Head of Business Performance & Visitor Experience will ensure the appropriate allocation of resources and provide expertise and advice across other Zoo departments to help ensure all Zoo activities are delivered effectively, to budget and that timeframes and objectives are aligned with the overall zoo strategic objectives.

He kōrero mōu: About you

To be considered for this unique opportunity you will have a post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. MBA, tourism etc.) and 10 years plus relevant experience.

You will have an exceptional and proven track record in commercial development and business performance – ideally within a visitor attraction and/or not-for-profit environment.

You will have proven leadership skills with an outstanding track record of developing and coaching teams to achieve results.

You will be a strategic thinker and highly skilled planner, with the ability to move seamlessly between big picture thinking and exquisite attention to detail.

You will have an extensive background in visitor/customer experience and have a tireless desire to exceed zoo visitor expectations in all that we offer.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

This is a unique and high-profile role. Bring your strong business acumen; your creative and optimistic thinking; your problem-solving collaborative approach; and your communication and negotiation skills to the zoo’s leadership table. If you have a desire to make a significant contribution to help conserve wildlife, strengthen our communities and improve our environment, then this could be the opportunity you have been looking for.

If this sounds like your next career challenge, we would love to hear from you. We will offer you a stimulating work environment and the chance to make a difference.
