Massey University, in conjunction with Palmerston North City Council and Square Edge Community Arts (Palmerston North), invites applications to join the School of English and Media Studies as Visiting Artist - Theatrical Director for a 12-week term during the period 9 November 2020 to 14 March 2021. Note this period encompasses two distinct parts, cast selection and commencement of rehearsals prior to Christmas, and continued rehearsals and production in the New Year leading up to the production.
The successful candidate's key focus over this period will be direction of the Manawatū Summer Shakespeare Festival which culminates in public performances in the Victoria Esplanade, Palmerston North, in early March 2021.
Performers and production team are drawn from Massey students and staff, and members of the Manawatū community.
We invite Directors to give us their expression of interest and a brief proposal (one to three pages) for one of the following plays:
- Romeo and Juliet
- Much Ado About Nothing
- A Midsummer Night's Dream
- Richard III
- Taming of the Shrew
The Visiting Artist will have the opportunity to:
- Develop and progress his/her own work
- Work with distance (extramural) students at contact courses held during the contract period
- Work closely with staff and students within the School
- Provide workshops/presentations for the Manawatū Community
The Visiting Artist will receive a salary of NZ$10,000 and rent-free use of a downtown flat.
