THE PERFORMANCE ARCADE 2021 NEEDS YOU!

We have taken the opportunity of our closed borders to focus the 2021 event on artists from Aotearoa NZ, to look at performance and live art practices in our country, and to prepare an exciting experience that will bring New Zealanders from across our motu to visit the event in Wellington this summer.

The Performance Arcade calls on NZ artists to propose their ideas for this exciting programme that celebrates the ten year anniversary of this unique event. We plan for the city to come alive with performing arts across the waterfront and urban environments. If you have a work that engages with public space, live performance, or audience agency then we would love to see your ideas!

WHAT IS PERFORMANCE ART IN AOTEAROA NZ?

WHAT IS PERFORMANCE IN THIS ERA OF SOCIAL DISTANCING?

WHAT IF THE CITY WAS A THEATRE?

ABOUT

This annual exhibition and programme of events located on Wellington Waterfront is recognised as an important platform for live art, with ten successful presentations over the past nine years. Hybrid gallery/stage architecture is made from an assembly of shipping containers to create a series of spaces for installation, performance art, sonic art, interactive media, video-art, forums, theatre, dance, and live music.

Opening onto the bustling life of Wellington Waterfront, these sites of encounter engage the public in contemporary art and performance practices outside the familiar constraints of gallery or theatre spaces, visited by 60-90,000 people each year.

PA2021

Our 2021 event will see The Performance Arcade expand across Wellington, presenting a city-wide collaboration between Wellington artists. A month-long explosion of creative energy will activate the city, transforming Wellington into a space for performance.

Proposals for works located in shipping containers are welcomed, as well as works that travel through the city or occupy waterfront environments to explore Wellington as a city of live art. A selection of works may also be selected for other exhibitions in other centres.
