Experience Wellington is looking for a leader to weave Māori culture throughout all of our institutions and implement a cohesive Māori engagement plan, bringing a Māori dimension to everything we do.

Experience Wellington provides the city with world-class museums, cutting-edge contemporary art, the region’s only publicly accessible space science experience and the only facility in New Zealand dedicated to tamariki and their creativity. Our visitor experiences include: Capital E, SpacePlace at Carter Observatory, City Gallery Wellington, Nairn Street Cottage, Wellington Museum and the Cable Car Museum. We also support the operation of the New Zealand Cricket Museum.
Our three year strategic plan is based on four strategic pou: Wheako Pōneke (enriching lives), Ma te huruhuru te manu ka rere (embracing te ao Māori), Tukua kia rere (Experience Wellington flourishes) and Mahitahi (working together as one team).
As a key leader reporting to the Chief Executive, you will lead the operational thinking and provide practical support that enables Experience Wellington to bring a Māori dimension to everything we do. The successful applicant will understand how all our functions are connected and aligned: from what we collect or exhibit, to the way we host visitors in our experiences. You will connect the mahi across Experience Wellington ensuring we have one joined up vision and strategic approach which provides a deeper understanding of how we plan to bring Te Ao Māori to the forefront of our work.
Alongside the leadership team, you will develop a work environment which recognises and acknowledges responsibility for developing Māori cultural capability and confidence is shared, and is a core enabling skill to enhance overall organisational performance.
A key part of the role will be to lead Experience Wellington’s development of, and formal engagement with, iwi/Māori in the arts and cultural sector. You will ensure our engagements are active and dynamic, promote our strategy, and ensure the rich advice provided by iwi/Māori is visible to Experience Wellington.
To be successful in this role you will be:
- Fluent in te reo Māori and suitable knowledge and experience of tikanga Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ao Māori.
- You will have a proven track record of supporting the implementation of Māori development in an organisation and successfully implementing capability shifts in line with the organisation’s vision.
- Bring your broad and established networks with mana whenua and the ability to enhance working relationships with an organisation’s current iwi/Māori partners and network.
