Haere mai, Afio mai, Huānyíng dàjiā, Ulutonu mai and Welkam!

Enjoy Contemporary Art Space is calling for applications to our 2022 summer residency programme. This is an opportunity for contemporary art practitioners to develop a project to be realised with Enjoy’s support, while working in Pōneke Wellington at the historic Rita Angus cottage and studio, in partnership with the Rita Angus CottageTrust.

Our artist selection will be based on demonstration of artistic accomplishment, submission of a well-conceived residency project and an indication that this residency will make a significant impact to your practice. Read more about Enjoy and past residency projects here.

The six-week residency includes:

  • Accommodation and a studio/workspace at the Rita Angus Cottage, including access to all household amenities, power and wifi.

  • $3000 fee covering a stipend for six weeks.

  • Paid domestic travel to and from Te-Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington to undertake the residency.

  • A paid exhibition opportunity at Enjoy in mid-2022.

  • Logistical and research support from Enjoy Staff.

  • Opportunities to engage with the history of the Rita Angus Cottage, supported by the Rita Augus CottageTrust.

  • Please note that family, partners or collaborators are welcome to stay at the cottage during your residency, but space is limited as the cottage is fairly small, with one double bedroom and a single bed in the studio.

WHO CAN APPLY?

The residency is open to Aotearoa-based contemporary art practitioners (artists, curators, collectives, writers) living in Aotearoa. Please note for 2022 we are extending our residency opportunity to include those who are currently based in Te-Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington.

Please note that proof of vaccination and a Covid-19 test may be required to travel into the region. If travel to Te Whanganui-a-Tara is not possible, we will try to find a workable solution.

WHAT’S THE SELECTION PROCESS?

Your proposal will be reviewed between Enjoy’s Curatorial Staff and Rita Angus Cottage Trust. In the case that a decision cannot be reached, a shortlist of applicants will be discussed with Enjoy’s Board of Trustees. You will be notified of the outcome of your proposal mid-December.

For overall fairness, and due to the volumes of applications we receive, we are unable to have in-person discussions over project applications with artists. Any pātai you have, can be discussed over email with Etanah at etanah@enjoy.org.nz

ABOUT THE ENJOY SUMMER RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

Enjoy’s Summer Residency Programme has been running since 2000 when the gallery was first established and has featured artists, curators and writers. Past summer residents have included: Ruby 嫦潔 White (2021), Daegan Wells (2020), Sorawit Songsataya (2019), Ella Sutherland (2018), Riff Raff (Daphne Simons and Li-Ming Hu) (2017), Johanna Mechen (2016), Ema Tavola (2015), Kirsten Dryburgh and Xin Cheng (2014) and Mata Aho Collective (2013).

ABOUT THE RITA ANGUS COTTAGE

Located in central Thorndon, the Rita Angus Cottage has considerable historical significance and was home to Angus from 1955–1970. The house and its garden feature in her work from this period, a physical reminder of the influence that these things had upon her.

The Rita Angus Cottage Trust (formerly the Thordon Trust) registered under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957, exists to protect and promote Thorndon’s history, primarily through ownership of the Rita Angus Cottage and associated sponsorship of an artist in residence.
