Kia mahi ngātahi mō Pōneke mō tōna āpōpō - Working together for Wellington's future.

Wellington City Council (WCC) is looking for a 3D Generalist to join our Digital Innovation Team for a one-year fixed-term contract.

We are building a Digital City Model using Unreal Engine to create hyper-realistic 3D visualisations of the city as it is now, as it was in the past and how it may be in the future. You will work alongside developers to produce visualisations and digital experiences to support projects from across Council. These projects will communicate complex data and scenarios to breadth of audiences for uses such as public engagement, data modelling, storytelling and educating. You will design and create digital assets and environments to support our 3D visualisation needs.

The team

Our Digital Innovation team provides innovative approach to the city's key Long Term Plan priorities and challenges using digital technology and design of digital solutions. The team is a mix of technical and innovation skills that collaborates with Council teams to address key challenges in areas such as customer engagement, sustainability, planning, and compliance. A key focus for the team is the Digital City Model programme of work.

Wellington's vision is to be an inclusive, sustainable, and creative capital city for people to live, work and play. A key to achieving this vision is empowering Wellingtonians to work together for the city's future.

The role

You will primarily work as part of the Digital City Model team, alongside developers and the product manager in a small, highly collaborative, energised team. You will work with a variety of teams from across Council and need to work closely with other technical specialists such as GIS, Architects, Engineers etc depending on the project at hand.

In this newly created role, you'll be listening to the ideas and needs of our internal customers and be able to turn them into 3D visualisations. You will enhance the realism, detail and quality of the Digital City Model environment. You will create terrain, textures, lighting, shading and more.

Our success in the Bloomberg Global Mayor's Challenge 2021 has enabled us to accelerate the development of the Digital City Model - your role will be integral in working with Council, Mana Whenua and climate scientists to create visualisations of climate impact, climate adaptation options and a historical model of the city.

Who we're looking for?

You are a creative, innovative problem-solver, and have strong communication skills. You are a generalist with a keen interest in environments, someone who is detail oriented but can see the big picture and knows what makes a scene.

You are someone who is passionate about creating value and positive outcomes for your customers and can work well in a team produce high quality outputs. You are receptive to feedback and able to develop and implement changes as required.

This is a newly created and one of kind role in the team, so you will be confident in your skills and capabilities and experienced working alongside developers. Ideally, you'll have at least 2 years' experience working with 3D modelling or visualisation (or experience working in another field with a relevant tertiary qualification).

Skills and experience required include the following:

  • Unreal Engine
  • Solid artistic and technical knowledge
  • General ability around modelling, texturing, shading and lighting and particularly in optimisation of assets and scenes
  • Experience as an environment artist is an advantage
  • Strong team player with a good sense of humour

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Experience with other game engines
  • Familiarity with ESRI products
  • Experience designing and modelling architectural based environments
  • Experience creating photorealistic visualisations for promotional materials

Why us?

There are not many roles for 3D Generalists in an organisation like ours. We are mission-driven, not profit-driven - our designers are tasked with making people's lives better. This is a chance to shape the way Wellingtonians experience life in our great city. Our team loves the fact they have a real impact for Wellingtonians.
