The Auckland Writers & Readers Festival seeks an experienced publicist to develop and implement the 2013 publicity and communications campaign for the Festival which runs 15 – 19 May 2013.

This is a freelance part-time contract role, but must include fulltime availability during the Festival.

The Publicist will work with the Festival Director to prepare and implement a communications and publicity plan. The plan shall cover the period from early 2013 through to the end of the Festival in May 2013, and will include the following key areas:

• Overall communications objectives and strategy

• Critical path

• Identification of key media

• Identification of key audiences

• A detailed media relations programme, setting out the proposed schedule of coverage for all key print, broadcast and on-line media vehicles, together with related deadlines

• Additional publicity initiatives for specific writers and for the Festival as a whole

Responsibilities: Public Relations

•Ensure that maximum positive media and public attention is attracted and developed for the Festival

• Work with the Festival Director on written communications, media and public relations

• Ensure media relationships are established and maintained

• Ensure only the appropriate spokesperson represents the Festival to the media and public

• Advise on and manage as required any issues of risk or damage control that may arise

Responsibilities: Publicity

• Take responsibility for communications, media, public relations and publicity for the 2013 Festival Launch in mid-March and the 2013 Festival

• Write and distribute media material, including images, information and any other content to media across all media genres, including maximising the Festival's presence on all identified on-line media channels

• Liaise with publishers to prepare interview schedules and media calls for Festival writers

• Prepare the Festival ezine monthly until March (x3) and then weekly from launch until the Festival

• Oversee the Festival's social media communications on Facebook and Twitter

• Facilitate, coordinate and attend as required all interviews, media calls and photo shoots, in conjunction with representative publishers

• Ensure all media material is signed off by the Festival Director

• Ensure deadlines are met across all media for stories/coverage

• Generate media coverage and manage distribution of media ticket giveaways

• Allocate media complimentary tickets as agreed

• Use POSE scheduling software to manage all publicity requirements

• Other duties as required

Responsibilities: Reporting

• Attend weekly meetings and provide the Festival Director with regular briefings on media plans

• Maintain the Festival media archive

• Provide a full post-Festival publicity report.

Competencies

• Experience in publicity, including social media, with a publishing background preferred

• Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

• Demonstrated project and time management skills

• High level of computer literacy

• Ability to manage a varied workload with minimal or no supervision and to deadlines

• Knowledge of the literature sector

• Excellent media relationships

Term

This is a part-time contract position from late January 2013 to 26 May 2013, including full time for the duration of the Festival.

 

Key skills

Senior experience in publicity, communication skills, project & time management, computer literacy, knowledge of the literature sector, excellent media relationships.
