Established in 1979 as a charitable trust, Choirs Aotearoa New Zealand incorporates the New Zealand Youth Choir and the semi-professional Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir. For the First time since 1989, the position of Music Director of the New Zealand Youth Choir has become vacant and CANZ is seeking expressions of interest.

After 22 years as Music Director of both choirs, Dr Karen Grylls takes the role of Artistic Director of CANZ and remains as Music Director of the Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir which is growing in scope.

The New Zealand Youth Choir has achieved considerable success since its formation in 1979. Performances around New Zealand and eight international tours have firmly established the choir’s international reputation for consistency, energy and excellence.

The choir meets for two or three residential courses of five to seven days duration, gives performances and educational workshops, and tours internationally generally every two or three years.

The Trust is seeking an individual with a proven experience in choral conducting, in working with young people and with an interest in furthering choral music in New Zealand. The Music Director will be responsible for the further development of the Youth Choir and will become an important member of the music staff.

 The Trust will select two candidates for the interview process which will include conducting a full course of the Youth Choir. An appointment will be made late in 2011 for the 2012 programme.
