Opening Friday 13 February, Drift celebrates the lakes, rivers, streams, harbours and coastlines that shape Aotearoa and the way we live.
Featuring works by Belinda Wilson, Kylie Rusk, Michelle McIver and Sara Langdon, Drift is a love letter to the bodies of water that define our landscape – and our memories. From quiet lake edges and winding rivers to playful shallows and open coastlines, the exhibition captures the joy, freedom and nostalgia of time spent in and around water.
This is Turua Gallery’s first exhibition of the year as it steps into its seventh year of operation, marking another milestone in its commitment to showcasing artists who reflect the heart and rhythm of New Zealand life.
Drift is designed as a gentle emotional pull – arriving just as summer fades and routine returns. These works are intended to stir memories of sun-warmed days, family holidays, spontaneous swims, floating lazily, splashing in shallows, and the laughter that lingers long after the towels are dry.
“I planned Drift as a way to hold onto that summer feeling,” says Turua Gallery owner Liss Wallace. “As people head back into work and everyday routines, I wanted these artworks to tug at their heartstrings – to remind them of the good times, whether from this summer or years gone by. Our waters are such a huge part of who we are as New Zealanders, and this show is about celebrating that deep connection.”
Each artist brings a unique perspective to the theme, interpreting water not just as a physical place, but as a space of memory, movement, calm and connection. Together, their works create a visual journey through the places where so many of our most cherished moments live.
Drift opens with a public opening night on Friday 13 February, with the exhibition running until 25 February. Presale viewings are available by appointment.
