Empower creative industry professionals and organisations by helping them navigate the arts ecosystem in Aotearoa.
Nau mai, haere mai.
Welcome to The Big Idea
The Big Idea Charitable Trust supports and champions the creative sector in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We exist to help artists and arts organisations connect with and navigate the sector.
Through our platform, we provide sector news and insights, job and opportunity listings, events and promotion, practical information and guides, and profiles that showcase the breadth of creative work happening across Aotearoa.
We work across art forms and communities, with a strong focus on accessibility, fairness, and sector wellbeing.
As a charitable trust, our purpose is to serve the needs of the creative community. We collaborate with artists, organisations, funders, and partners to strengthen the ecosystem that supports creative practice.
At our core, The Big Idea is about connection — connecting people to information, opportunities, and each other — and ensuring the creative voices of Aotearoa New Zealand are heard, valued, and supported.
Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa
Let us keep close together, not far apart.
Our Partners
Our work within New Zealand's arts infrastructure wouldn't be possible without our partners. We're proud to acknowledge their support and the vital role they play in helping thousands access the arts.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
The Big Idea was born from the Arts Work Project—a collaborative initiative launched in 1999 by Creative New Zealand, Auckland City, Auckland New Ventures Inc, Artists Alliance, and Work & Income.
Officially launched by the Prime Minister on 3 December 2001, The Big Idea Charitable Trust was established in 2003 to oversee the platform’s growth, expand its digital presence, and develop new initiatives to support and strengthen the creative sector.
