Waiheke Works on Paper represents a curated selection of artwork from Waiheke artists Rīhari Warnock (Ngāti Manu), Leila Lees, Paul Dashwood and Margaret Emsley — all of whom work on paper using various mediums and techniques. Rīhari Warnock’s extraordinary pen and ink illustrations explore storytelling through carefully executed illustrations of Aotearoa’s flora and fauna using te ao Māori motif and patterns. Writer and printmaker Leila Lees works in drypoint, monoprint, mezzotint and woodcut through which she expresses “the intangible essence within the natural world.” Paul Dashwood, who built his own printing press from a discarded washing mangle, is known for his brooding figurative linocuts and monotypes. Margaret Emsley, a skilled artist in both oil and charcoal, has a knack for capturing transformations in nature through carefully executed, almost photographic, illustrations.
