About Toi Tauranga Art Gallery
Toi Tauranga Art Gallery is a cultural landmark committed to creating exceptional, inclusive art experiences for our communities. Our programme showcases historical and contemporary art from the region, Aotearoa and beyond. The gallery recently reopened following a full refurbishment and is located in the heart of the city.
We are guided by our vision – Toi Tū Tauranga: to build lifelong relationships with art – through creating exceptional experiences that inspire, challenge, educate, and connect.
We advocate for the rich visual arts culture of Aotearoa and embrace the diversity of our communities, region, and our relationships with Tāngata Whenua.
Toi Tauranga Art Gallery is part of the Te Manawataki o Te Papa – one of Aotearoa’s most significant cultural development projects – an exciting time for art, culture and heritage in the region.

The Role
The Curator plays a vital role in researching, developing, and delivering an ambitious and inspiring exhibition programme, including:
- Artist commissions
- Group and thematic exhibitions
- Touring shows
- Toi Tauranga Art Gallery Collection-based projects
You will help shape the creative direction of the gallery, ensuring our programme reflects art historical, contemporary practice, diverse voices, and best practice in Aotearoa’s arts sector.
What You’ll Do
- Undertake research into artists, ideas, and art histories
- Develop exhibitions from concept to delivery
- Write high-quality curatorial and interpretive material
- Engage with audiences through public talks, interviews, and events
- Support the creation of inclusive, accessible visitor experiences
About You
You will bring:
- A relevant tertiary qualification (Art History, Fine Arts, Curatorship, Museum Studies, etc.)
- Experience developing and delivering exhibitions
- Strong knowledge of contemporary art and Aotearoa’s cultural landscape
- Excellent research, writing, communication, and public-speaking skills
- Understanding of tikanga Māori, mātauranga Māori, and bicultural practice
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects
- A collaborative, creative, and inclusive approach
- Clear and informed understanding of the role Toi Tauranga Art Gallery plays within the regional and national arts landscape of Aotearoa.
