Preserving the CSA/ CoCA archive
CoCA Toi Moroki Centre of Contemporary Art is about to embark on an exciting six-month project to conserve our visual arts legacy. The Canterbury Society of Arts (CSA)/ CoCA archive is held at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū cared for by Librarian Kaitiaki Pukapuka Tim Jones.
The archive covers the formation of the CSA in 1880 through to its current activities as the Centre of Contemporary Art. While the archive is currently accessible, undertaking this project now will increase access to our arts heritage and safeguard the stories that are an important part of our cultural identity.
We are looking for a skilled Project Archivist to lead a six-month project to assess, organise, preserve, and document the CSA/ CoCA archives stored at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū.
These archives include records, photographs, exhibition documentation, catalogues, audiovisual materials, and administrative files spanning the CSA/ CoCA’s long history as a foundational arts institution in Aotearoa.
The purpose of this project is to create a structured, accessible, and sustainable archive that supports future research, exhibitions, governance and storytelling.
The appointment will be for the period May to October/ November 2026. For more information, please see our website for a copy of the job description.
We are grateful for the support we have received to be able to undertake this project. And we thank the Stout Trust proudly managed by Perpetual Guardian, and Lottery Environment and Heritage for funding to employ an Archivist. We also thank the Friends of Christchurch Art Gallery for funding towards archival materials.
